Above the old fort, high on The Needles Headland, is a row of simple, single-storey former coastguard cottages, now holiday homes. They are at the end of a continuous area of 370 acres of open downland owned by the National Trust and make an excellent base from which to explore the island.

The cottage's layout

Ground floor
Kitchen/dining room, sitting room with open fire, three bedrooms (1 double with 5' bed and 1 twin and 1 single) and bathroom with electric shower over bath.
Visitor notes

Heating: Night storage heating included.

Parking: There is a parking area adjacent to the row of cottages.

Accessibility: The road up to the cottage is steep and winding in parts. Access may be difficult in adverse weather conditions.

The bedroom and bathroom are on the ground floor but the cottage may not be suitable for wheelchair users.

Garden: There is a shared grassed area to the front of the cottages.

Children should be supervised as the garden is not enclosed and the cottages are within 5 minutes walk from the cliffs edge.

Utilities: Water is regularly pumped uphill to a holding tank at these cottages. There are also individual tanks above each cottage. If there is very high usage all at once this can drain the tanks and you will need to wait for them to refill before water is again available. It is therefore best to spread baths out over the day.

Logs/Charcoal: Additional logs can be purchased in advance through the contact centre. Logs are £4.50 per bag or £20 for unlimited access to the log store.

Offers: Guests will have free access (during opening hours) to all Isle of Wight National Trust properties. Please take your holiday confirmation invoice as proof of eligibility to gain entry.

Please note: these cottages are in a very exposed position. In periods of high winds car doors may slam and debris may be blown around, for this reason the picnic benches have had to be removed.

It's hard to believe this special place of rolling green countryside and white chalky coastland is only half an hour away from the English mainland; time spent here feels nothing like the frantic pace of daily life. And thanks to low light pollution, it's one of the best spots in the South to see the stars flash across the dark sky at night – so remember to pack a flask!

    Lovely cosy cottage

These cottages overlooking the Needles are in a wonderful location. We have stayed in all three over a period of twenty five years. They are quite exposed and a bit of an up hill drive to reach but a unique spot and lovely and cosy cottages.

    Peace and quiet

We enjoyed the location of the property, the peace and quite, along with the high quality of the fixtures and fittings within the property.

    Fabulous views

Exceptional standard of accommodation with fabulous views. We stayed at the Needles Headlands during Storm Katie where a gust of wind was recorded at 106 MPH. The next morning which was a Bank Holiday, we were visited by a staff member from NT to check we and the properties had survived the storm. This was much appreciated.
