Exterior view of Emley Farm House, Bowlhead Green, Surrey

You could think it may be densely populated and just home to the bustling metropolis of London, but don't underestimate the South East's capacity for hidden charms, secluded landscapes and shady nooks to catch your breath. There's lots to explore from the hazy meadows and pastoral valleys of the South Downs, the dazzling White Cliffs of Dover and the glorious gardens at Sissinghurst and Polesden Lacey.

The South Downs, having recently acquired status as a National Park roll across the southern coast f England from the historic city of Winchester in the west down to the cliffs at Beachy Head in the east. National Trust places to visit in this area abound, including Petworth House and Park, with its sumptuous interiors and rolling parkland and Uppark House and Gardens, now restored to its former glory after a major fire in 1989, while nearby are Polesden Lacey on the North Downs and Chartwell, the family home of Sir Winston Churchill. Other attractions in the area include the Cathedral city of Chicester, the historic dockyard at Portsmouth, Goodwood, the home of both horse and motor racing and the seaside resort of Brighton. The South Downs themselves offer wonderful walking and cycling opportunities, all with stunning views of the coastline.

    Made special:

The location ,view nd access to walks from the house.. Sadly we were not able to do much walking because of the very wet weather. The walks however in the welcome pack started from the house a great plus so we popped out wnen the rain stopped Welcome pack, beautiful hand written card written to us personally welcoming us to the property plus a tea tray laid out and a lovely arrangement of flowers was a wonderful way to start our stay. Congratulatioms !

    Apartment perfect

All the staff, including volunteers were extremely helpful and welcoming. They knew who I was by name which made you feel they cared. The apartment was perfect; comfortable, warm, beautifully decorated and quiet which is just what I wanted. The whole look of the apartment, its location and feeling of peace and quiet and not being overlooked made this place special.

    Delightful walks from doorstep

Being able to park the car and not use it for a week, instead setting off on delightful walks from our doorstep whether just round the gardens, for a few miles around the reservoir, or a 10 mile hike.

    The cottage is great

We've had a very nice and comfortable stay in The Servants' Wing. The cottage is great, very comfortable, and it's beautifully situated. The staff of Standen is very friendly and helpfull. Lovely countryside, beautiful surroundings. If there weren't so many other nice cottages and places to visit, we'd most certainly come back.

Our second visit - again in spring time. We have enjoyed our stay immensely and we regard it as a great privilege to live in this house even for a short time.
