You could think it may be densely populated and just home to the bustling metropolis of London, but don't underestimate the South East's capacity for hidden charms, secluded landscapes and shady nooks to catch your breath. There's lots to explore from the hazy meadows and pastoral valleys of the South Downs, the dazzling White Cliffs of Dover and the glorious gardens at Sissinghurst and Polesden Lacey.

The South Downs, having recently acquired status as a National Park roll across the southern coast f England from the historic city of Winchester in the west down to the cliffs at Beachy Head in the east. National Trust places to visit in this area abound, including Petworth House and Park, with its sumptuous interiors and rolling parkland and Uppark House and Gardens, now restored to its former glory after a major fire in 1989, while nearby are Polesden Lacey on the North Downs and Chartwell, the family home of Sir Winston Churchill. Other attractions in the area include the Cathedral city of Chicester, the historic dockyard at Portsmouth, Goodwood, the home of both horse and motor racing and the seaside resort of Brighton. The South Downs themselves offer wonderful walking and cycling opportunities, all with stunning views of the coastline.

    Made enjoyable...

We loved our time at The Morris Apartment. Beautiful apartment in one of our favourite houses. The staff member who greeted us was excellent (think he was the Head Gardener) and his wife Sam, who looks after the apartment does a wonderful job. Please thank her for us. All the staff and volunteers we met were really helpful. It was lovely being able to walk the grounds at night when everyone else had gone. Would have been lovely to do the same in the house but as we were able to get in first things it was almost the same. I managed to leave a fleece behind after our stay and the staff contacted me to let me know - I hadn't even realised. As we are not too far away we went and collected it and Grace was most helpful. Please thank her as well. Lead very busy working lives but hope to be able to visit The Morris Apartment again soon. Thank you.
