Visitor notes

Heating: The house has partial central heating and some night storage heaters.

Garden: There is a private terraced garden.

Utilities/Electricals: The washing machine and tumble dryer are a combined washer/dryer.

Please Note: The Grass Tennis Court is only suitable for use in the dryer periods of the summer, and it is expected that the court will be marked out and available in June, July, August and September. At other times of the year the surface is too wet for playing on, and using the court out of season will damage the surface and could result in slipping over.

Local Suppliers: There is fishing 8 miles away at Old Mill Fishery, please telephone 01935 414771 for more details.

South West England

The South West region is probably England's most well-known holiday hotspot, being home to some of the most famous seaside resorts. Pretty villages and harbours in Cornwall, many with sweeping sandy beaches, such as St Ives, Polzeath and Port Isaac to name but a few, give way to sophisticated seaside resorts in Devon and Dorset which include Bournemouth, Torquay and Ilfracombe. The history of this region is unrivalled; Wiltshire's spectacular downland and the stone circles at Avebury and Stonehenge, through Hardy's Dorset, dramatic Dartmoor and gentler Exmoor, to the mining landscapes of Cornwall and West Devon, which are now recognised as being of international significance, having been awarded World Heritage Site status in 2006. The Trust protects 370 miles of the coastline in Devon and Cornwall and, wherever you are in the two far western counties, you're never more than 25 miles from the sea. As well as this peninsula, the Trust also cares for much of the countryside in Gloucestershire, Somerset, Wiltshire and Dorset and a wide array of fascinating properties to visit and explore. Not surprisingly, perhaps, this area is also home to the widest selection of National Trust holiday cottages.

    Warm and comfortable

We were happily surprised by the comfort of such an old building - I expected it to be cold and drafty but it was beautifully warm and comfortable. Kitchen was fantastically equipped and the location wonderful. Have already recommended it to others! Felt like we were going back in time. all the old furnishings and décor made it really special

    Enjoyable stay

Having previously stayed at Lytes Cary during the summer months I wondered whether I would be so impressed during a cold damp January. I shouldn't have worried! The house was warm throughout (no mean feat for such a large property) and our group thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. Even the gardens were a delight to walk around, not a leaf out of place, just waiting for the spring to arrive. If you're looking for a warm welcome with enough room for everyone to relax, Lytes Cary is the place to be.

    Stunning setting

This was a perfect place for 14 people to spend quality time with ample room. There is a first class pub 3/4 mile away in Kingsdon. Adam served us a very special dinner on one of our evenings.

    Perfect place for a celebration

It was perfect place to celebrate my birthday in style with my partner and my friends. The volunteer ladies that we're looking after Lytes Cary Manor garden in front of our cottage were very friendly.

    A very special place

We have stayed at Lytes Cary twice now both for family anniversaries and will no doubt do so again. We have recommended it to several friends and family. It is indeed a very special place for special events. You don't stay in places like that every day!

    The house is quite exceptional

We were at Lytes Cary for New Year and enjoyed the free run of the gardens to ourselves - brilliant for hide and seek! The house is quite exceptional in its size and grandeur (we are regular NT customers and have sampled a wide selection) We were 3 families of 5 and as the children are quite young, I would just warn you that the twin bedroom on the ground floor is a very long way from all the other bedrooms, through 3 fire doors which caused a bit of a problem. If you have children with you, make sure they bring slippers - we ended up with several splinters. Overall, we would definitely recommend this house

We had a really lovley time

My grandparents booked this house this summer(2008) for my gran's birthday as my great-grandmother used to be in service there. We had a really lovley time despite the bad weather. The West Somerset Railway is really worth going on (especially if you fancy a day at the beach) as is the air museum

    Excellent Value

This was my first taste of a National Trust Holiday Cottage. Full to capacity, there were 14 of us, it never felt crowded, spotlessly clean, very comfortable and well equipped. Lovely Grounds were a bonus. If this is the normal standard I can't wait to try somewhere else. Excellent Value
