Lapwing Cottage was originally used to house livestock on the ground floor whilst the upstairs of the barn was the granary. The cottages have been converted from a group of 18th-century farm buildings and are situated around a paved courtyard in open countryside.

The cottages have been sympathetically restored using traditional materials whilst incorporating modern green technology such as the use of Ground Source Heat Pump in the heating system. It has lots of character with exposed stone walls, beams and a wood-burning stove. They are ideal if several families are looking to holiday together while still enjoying their own space and facilities.

The cottages are situated less than a mile from Fountains Abbey, a World Heritage site with spectacular ruins of a 12th-century Cistercian abbey, Studley Water Garden and the deer park, all of which you have free entry to during opening hours. You will have hours of fun exploring these wonderful surroundings. This also makes the perfect base for exploring Yorkshire with the Dales, Moors and York within driving distance.

Fountains Abbey, Studley Royal Water Garden and the Deer park have events to appeal to all ages throughout the year. Visit the web pages by clicking on the nearby tab, above, to see details of events, nature, walking and cycling trails when planning your holiday.

From the wild natural beauty of the Yorkshire Dales in the west, the purple heather moorlands of the Yorkshire Moors in the east, the magnificent coastline (much of which we care for) and Northumberland National Park to the north a holiday with us will give you the chance to explore some or all of this fascinating area. As if that wasn’t enough, there are also historic towns and cities and stories after stories in the historic houses we care for.

    Made enjoyable...

The cottage was just lovely, clean, comfortable, well designed, and had everything we needed, especially in the kitchen..... Plenty of parking, great location and central for the area to visit York, Whitby, etc.... Great customer service with the NT staff. We bought a bag of logs ( for the wood burning stove in the cottage ) from the NT shop at Fountains abbey and because it was some distance from our parked car, they kindly offered to drop it off at our was waiting for us upon our return..... Thank you to the staff....10/10

    Made enjoyable..

It was lovely arriving to welcome tea/coffee/milk/biscuits and fresh flowers. It was a beautiful cottage with plenty of space and very clean. It was particularly useful having a travel cot and high chair provided.
