A few minutes stroll from the pebbly and rocky foreshore of Peppercombe beach, this row of three cottages including Coastguard Cottage 1 and Coastguard Cottage 2 is hidden away in the beautiful secluded woods of the Peppercombe valley. The cottages were traditionally built out of cob in the late eighteenth century, to house the officers of what was then called the Preventive Service - tasked with policing this wild stretch of coast to prevent smuggling - and later evolved into the life saving Coastguard Service. Wonderfully snug and picturesque, these cottages make ideal bases from which to explore this fascinating and little known coast.

Perfect for nature lovers, birdwatchers and anyone with a hankering after a remote spot close to the beach. Clovelly is around three miles away, and the more remote and rugged Hartland Point is a little further to the west. The delightful and lively old port of Bideford on the River Torridge, with plenty of shops, pubs and restaurants, is just four miles to the east.

The popular family beach of Westward Ho! with its blue flag status is just ten miles away with designated surfing areas. Children love to visit the local attractions of the Big Sheep and the Milky Way Theme Park is one of Devon’s top attractions.

    Made enjoyable...

The coast guard cottages at Peppercombe are in a great location and have an excellent ambiance for a cosy retreat. The cottage was very clean tidy and had excellent standard of appliances that you could need on holiday.

The cottage was fantastic, the location was super and met all our requirements for a chilled week away. The level of cleanliness was a credit to Lynne the cottage's caretaker.

    Superb location

The cottage was very clean, and we appreciated all the small touches made by the caretaker / cleaner. The location was superb, just what we wanted. We wish we could've stayed longer. The garden at the property was v nice, but it would've been even better if the small stream was made accessible. It would be a small job to cut back some of the plants to do this.

    Exceeded our expectations

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the cottage exceeded our expectations. We really appreciated the small things like the back pack and flask which came in handy. We will definitely booking another trip. What made our stay special was just the facilities at the cottage. We felt at home and that we were really being looked after. Everything we need and more was provided at the cottage which made our stay really special. It enabled us to relax enjoy the roaring stove which added to the experience.
