What do you love most about summer holidays? Eating al fresco, perhaps. Exploring under the sun. The freedom to strip back and enjoy life’s simple pleasures, surrounded by your family and friends.

If you’re hankering after that holiday feeling, why not start planning now? Deciding what you’d like to do in those long days is a great place to begin. To help you on your way, here are some of our favourite things to do on holiday.

Experience the great outdoors

There’s nothing so invigorating as taking a break in nature. Whether you’re an energetic and seasoned outdoors enthusiast, or someone who needs a big dose of rest and relaxation, the great outdoors can provide it all.

If you’re feeling full of beans, long walks or hikes are an ideal way to get out into beautiful places. For sea air and stunning views try coastal paths – like the ones on Dorset’s Jurassic coast or the shores of Pembrokeshire. If you fancy ramping up the challenge, scaling hills and mountains will give you a great sense of achievement – as well as a whole new perspective.

For many of us, it just wouldn’t be summer without the beach. Perfect for lazing and paddling on sunny days, beaches also offer a host of activities for the more adventurous. Try lessons in surfing, sea kayaking or even coasteering (a combination of scrambling, climbing, jumping and swimming) whilst staying in one of our coastal holiday cottages.

To live the outdoor life to the max, opt for camping. Keep things simple with a good old-fashioned tent. Or – if you’d like to hang on to some creature comforts –choose from yurts, tipis, and even wooden pods!

Garden walks

For a gentler fix of the outdoors, a wander through National Trust gardens could be just the tonic you need. Summer is a time when many of the gardens we look after are bursting with colour and looking their best. Trelissick garden with its exotic borders and trees, or the classic rose gardens of Barrington Court are both high on the holiday wish-list.

Many of our holiday cottages are located near, or even right inside landscaped gardens, giving you the freedom to explore these special places out of hours during your stay.
