We’ve been operating camping holidays since the 1930s and cottage breaks since the 1950s.
Following the encouragement of farm tenants to take visitors in and the provision of several camp sites our cottages started in the North West. They were originally kept deliberately simple and were described as “providing stone caravans”.
By 1973 there were 81 cottages, with the majority in Cornwall (56). We had 12 in the Lake District, 8 in Northern Ireland and 5 in Wessex with others dotted nationally.
By 1981 the portfolio had expanded to 148 cottages, but it was still a quiet and friendly operation; Cornwall generated an annual average rental income of £2,924 per cottage.
In 1985 cottages were made available to everyone equally, changing a 15 year policy which allowed National Trust members priority booking access.
We now operate over 400 cottages across Wales, Northern Ireland and England. These come in all shapes and sizes, from sleeps 2 – 18 people and we have a number of clusters of properties on farms and in villages. Everyone is brimming with character and has been lovingly restored to reflect the original feel. There’s a sense of occasion when you stay with the National Trust; from gatehouses and farmhouses, to lighthouses and castles. Inspirational examples of holiday cottage conservation projects include Treleddyd Fawr and Malt House. We will be continuing with this important work in 2017 and you can find out more about these new cottages and when they are available to book.
As every property is on National Trust land you enjoy the space to relax in truly unbelievable locations – from looking out over rugged coastlines and watching deer roam across your front garden, to stepping out of your front door into tree-lined vistas and immaculate gardens.
Wherever you stay you can take a deep breath and escape the day to day. If you are on a stately home estate you will also have access to the grounds after all the visitors have gone. We are very proud of our guest feedback and know that people love to keep returning to their special cottage. This is demonstrated below by our excellent Feefo rating,an independent review system which captures customers' feedback.
But it’s not just the properties which stand us apart. We genuinely care about you having a good time. Everything you would expect from National Trust is reflected in our service – we are welcoming, considerate and always go the extra mile. We know the details of every property, as we own them all, and this means you are looked after from booking to departure by us.
Our overall aim is to ‘Grow the nation’s love of special places’ and every time you stay with us the proceeds go directly back towards protecting, restoring or opening up buildings and landscapes for everyone to enjoy. Your contribution is invaluable in helping the National Trust continue to protect and grow the nation’s love of special of places.
Thank you, booking with us is more than time well spent.
